We're Your Neighbors
IslandBarter isn't some mainland corporation. We're right here on St. Thomas, building a trade exchange that works the way island life already works — neighbors helping neighbors.
Born Right Here on Rock
IslandBarter started with a simple observation: on St. Thomas, we already barter. The mechanic who fixes your truck gets his hair cut for free. The restaurant owner feeds the electrician who keeps the lights on. It happens every day, in every neighborhood, from Red Hook to Frenchtown.
The problem? These trades are informal. There's no record, no balance, and no way to spend what you've earned with anyone other than the person you helped. If you fix ten air conditioners but only need one haircut, you're stuck.
IslandBarter changes that. We created a formal exchange where every service has a value, every trade is recorded, and every Trade Dollar you earn can be spent with any member in the network. Your plumber's haircut funds your dinner out. The restaurant's landscaping pays for their accounting. The whole island wins.
We built this for St. Thomas first — because this is home. We know the neighborhoods, we know the businesses, and we know that trust is the real currency on this island. IslandBarter just makes that trust go further.
Not Just Another App
We're not a tech startup from Silicon Valley. We're a community-first trade exchange built on the same trust that makes island life work.
Island-Verified Members
Every member is a real business or service provider on St. Thomas. We check. Because on this island, everybody know everybody — and your name is your bond.
Trust-Based Exchange
No anonymous transactions. When you trade with someone, you know who they are, where they work, and that the community stands behind them. This isn't the internet — this is your neighborhood.
T$1 = $1 USD. Always.
One Trade Dollar equals one US Dollar. No complicated exchange rates, no fluctuating values, no crypto nonsense. You charge the same prices you always charge — just in Trade Dollars.
The People Behind the Exchange
IslandBarter is built and run by people who live and work right here on St. Thomas.
Terry Arthur
Web developer, consultant, and longtime St. Thomas resident. Terry saw how the island already runs on trust and trade — and built IslandBarter to formalize what neighbors have been doing for generations. When he's not building software, you'll find him on the water or arguing about the best pate on island.
Meet the Donkey
The donkey is as St. Thomas as it gets. Hardworking, stubborn in the best way, and always part of the community. You see them on the roads, in the hills, just doing their thing. Our mascot represents what IslandBarter is all about: showing up, being reliable, and being part of the island fabric. No flash, no hype — just steady work and good neighbors.
